James L Hern

James Leo Hern, known as Leo, died peacefully after a battle with cancer on August 4, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Milton, the last of ten children born to John D. and Marguerite H. Hern. Leo spent his childhood in Milton and his family later moved to Centerville where he graduated from Barnstable High School. After earning a degree in Finance at Framingham State University he began his career at Fleet Bank and then moved to Fidelity Investments, where he met his wife, Edwina. He later joined his brother, Peter, at Blue Hill Lincoln Mercury where he gained a passion for automobiles. Leo took his love of technology and autos to Perceptive Automata and Motional as a test engineer, working on the launch of autonomous vehicles. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, reading, and hitting the beach.

Leo was the devoted son of the late John D. and Marguerite (Hickey) Hern. Leo's memory will be remembered by his wife, Edwina Hern of Easton, his sons, James Hern and Thomas Hern and his siblings, Kathleen Dray of Boston, Anne Hern of Hingham, Margaret Hern of Barnstable, Amy Nutter and her husband Steve of Falmouth, Rosemary Lockwood and her husband David of Scituate, Peter Hern and his wife Susan of Hingham, and Tracy Hern of Yachats, OR. Leo was predeceased by his siblings John D. Hern Jr. and Maureen M. Hern.

Leo will be missed by his nephews and nieces, Matthew Scanlon, Catherine Scanlon Coombs, Julia Hern-Fondation, Lilly Hern-Fondation, Molly McGreevy, John McGreevy, Ally McGreevy, Benjamin Nutter and his partner Kimberly Laks, Megan Nutter, William Lockwood and his wife Courtney, Madeline (Lockwood) Morgan and her husband Drew, Henry Lockwood, Laura (Hern) Gallotto and her husband Michael, John Hern, Elena Hern, Mark DeGirolamo, Christopher Hern, Ryan DeGirolamo, John Carrow, Paige Carrow and Andrew DeGirolamo; his grandnephew and grandnieces, Ryan Scanlon, Colin Scanlon, Nora Morgan, Lily Morgan, Rory Lockwood, Tess Lockwood, his many cousins, so many good friends and his loyal dog, Harry.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Sunday, August 10 from 2-5pm at Kane Funeral Home, 605 Washington St, South Easton. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 11 at 11am at Immaculate Conception Church, 193 Main St, North Easton. Burial will take place privately at a later date.
