James J. Hlinican, age 82, of
Cleveland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026. He was born on August 13, 1943, in
Cleveland, Ohio, to the late James and Helen (Vingin) Hlinican.
James proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. Shortly after beginning his military service, he married the love of his life, Strelsa, on July 14, 1962, in
Cleveland, Ohio. Together, they shared nearly 64 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, devotion, and unwavering partnership.
A skilled contractor by trade, James took great pride in his work and the craftsmanship he brought to every project. Outside of his profession, he found joy in working on cars, fishing, cooking, watching movies, and traveling. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his beloved wife, family, and friends.
James was a man of exceptional integrity, strong morals, and admirable character. Known for his warm personality, he never met a stranger. He was kind-hearted, generous, and always ready to lend a helping hand-whether it meant offering food, financial support, or even a place to stay. Proud of his Polish heritage, James lived his life with compassion, humor, and a deep sense of community. He will be remembered as an extraordinary husband, father, and friend-the kind of person everyone was fortunate to know.
He was preceded in death by his son, James J. Hlinican II; his sister, Charlotte Flemming; his parents, James and Helen Hlinican; and his son-in-law, Mark Anastasi.
James is survived by his loving wife, Strelsa Hlinican; his children, April Anastasi (Don Anthony) and Lisa Oxford (Jim Oxford); his grandchildren, Analisa Anastasi, Hunter Anastasi, Lauren LaRocca, and Luke LaRocca; his sister, Virgie Males (Paul Males); his sister-in-law, Karen Black (Douglas Black); as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
James's legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
