James L. Hughes

James Leroy Hughes (Jay) was born on February 8, 1948, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late James Leroy Hughes Sr. and Ruth Alexander. On July 4, 2025, at 10:00 p.m., James transitioned peacefully at UPMC Montefiore Hospital. He is lovingly remembered by his twin sister, (Ebony) Linda Hughes, and his sister, Marcia Hughes. Also mourning his passing is his devoted companion and dear friend, Nancy Noris; stepdaughter, Elaine Wilson; and beloved granddaughter, Phoebe Reid. He also leaves behind cherished nieces, Tina, Kesi, Melania; nephews, Ahmed and Damien; great-nephew, Jayden; bonus daughters, Tina and Tangela; ex-wife, Kim Hughes and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends who loved him deeply.
Jay was educated at Schenley High School, where he developed his passion and skill as an expert cook. He was employed at National Valve as a steamfitter before spending the last 20 years of his career working as a rehab counselor at UPMC's Safe Haven Facility, a drug and alcohol residential program for men, now known as Next Steps. There, he was highly respected and admired by both colleagues and residents alike. Jay was an avid fisherman-a passion that became his life's joy. The Allegheny River became his second home, where he fished before and after work, on his days off, and throughout every season.
Affectionately known as "Everyday Jay," he mentored many fellow fishermen and earned a reputation for catching record-breaking fish. Friends and family eagerly looked forward to enjoying the incredible catches he generously shared. Beyond his love for fishing, Jay's greatest joy was his granddaughter, Phoebe, who was truly the light of his life. In his later years, Jay found peace and purpose in his relationship with God-an eternal bond that now carries him home.
