James “Jim” E. Bennett, Jr., 91, of Cheraw, SC passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28th, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center in Lexington, SC.
Jim was born on April 6th, 1933, to Jim and Annabelle Bennett in San Antonio, TX. The Bennetts moved to Greer, SC during Jim’s childhood. After graduating from Greer High School in 1951, he went on to study Textiles at Clemson University and graduated in 1955. While at Clemson, he was a member of the Company C-4 Pershing Rifles Drill Team.
After college, Jim served our country as a Corpsman with the US Navy/Marines. He was also a member of the Army National Guard and a member of the Cheraw American Legion Post 23.
In 1956, Jim married the love of his life, Margery Mayfield, and they had three sons, Jay, David, and Graham. Jim had a long, successful career and developed many lasting relationships in the textiles industry working for J.P. Stevens Textile Company in Greer, Cheraw, and then Wagram, NC. He was a man of strong faith and he taught his sons the importance of family, hard work, perseverance, and doing what is right.
Jim was an avid hunter and traveled the world pursuing this passion. His hobbies included painting, golfing, singing in the choir, and pulling for his Clemson Tigers.
He was predeceased by his parents and wife. Surviving are his three sons, Jay Bennett and his wife Elizabeth, David Bennett and his wife Marci, and Graham Bennett; five grandchildren, Hayes Anderson and her husband Jeffrey, Jillian Bennett, Garrett White and his wife Heather, Jeb Bennett, and Greer Bennett; and one great-grandchild, Bennett White.
Jim enjoyed spending his last year at Wellmore Assisted Living in Lexington, SC.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Cheraw on Tuesday, July 2nd with visitation at 1:00pm in the church Fellowship Hall and a celebration of life at 2:00pm in the sanctuary. Live Streaming will be available for those not able to attend in person by visiting the Kiser Funeral Home website at https://www.kiserfuneralhome.com. A private military entombment will be held at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation in Jim’s name to First United Methodist Men at 117 3rd Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.
