James R. Johnston, 91, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024, at his home in Mt. Laurel, NJ, formerly of
Cherry Hill, NJ.
Born on November 12, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA Jim was the son of William and Mae (McMahon) Johnston and the youngest brother of William J. Johnston, Jr. and Robert M. Johnston.
Jim's life was one of enduring love and partnership with his beloved wife of 67 years, Joy (nee Shrader). Together, they built a life filled with laughter, support, and mutual respect. He was a guiding light to his daughters, Vicki Delo (Michael), Cheri Drea, Suzanne Johnson (Robert), and a proud grandfather to Amber Lampkin (Rich), Christine Lydic (Kevin), James Seppanen, Brittany Drea, Matthew Seppanen, Joy Johnson, Sean Johnson (Kerry), Brian Johnson (Nicole), Robert Johnson (Danielle), Patrick Johnson, and the late Michael Delo. His legacy continues through his adored great-grandchildren, Michael, Holden, Trent, Chase, Jason, Ava, Nathan, Emma, Liam, Jack, Jase, Luke, and Dulton. James also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Roberta Nemetz, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Jim graduated from Lansdowne High School where he played basketball. A 1954 alumnus of Penn State University, Jim earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and was a proud brother of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, a tradition his grandson Michael Delo would later follow. His commitment to education and fraternity life spoke to the leadership and friendships that would characterize his later pursuits. James honorably served his country in the US Army and was stationed in Germany.
A resident of
Cherry Hill, NJ, where he raised his family, Jim cherished the summer vacations spent in
Ocean City, NJ since his childhood and later with his wife and daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an avid reader who could often be found engrossed in a book, sharing his love for literature with his children and grandchildren. A true Philadelphia sports enthusiast, Jim held Eagles season tickets at Franklin Field and Veterans Stadium, celebrating each victory with the same zeal as if it were the team's first.
Jim's interests extended to the fairways as a longtime member of the Medford Lakes Country Club, where he enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends and family. His love for the game was matched only by the camaraderie and sportsmanship he found on the course. During the winter months, he and Joy would retreat to their home in
Palm Harbor, FL, where they enjoyed the warmth and community of friends both old and new.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Sunday, April 28th from 5-7 PM at the Bradley Funeral Home, Rt.73 and Evesham Rd.,
