James King Obituary
James "Jim" King, age 69, of Brighton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, June 7, 2024, after a 7 ½ year battle with neuroendocrine cancer. He was born on November 16, 1954, in Grand Junction, Colorado to James Truman and Ramona King. He was the third of four children and the youngest for the first 10 years of his life. On June 28, 1975, he married Bonnie Weber, the love of his life, and they were blessed with one daughter.
When Jim was three, his family moved to Hatch, New Mexico, and in 1963, they returned to Colorado, settling in the Brighton area, where he lived for the rest of his life. Jim attended Brighton High School and was in the class of 1972.
Jim worked for Denver Metal Finishing and then Steamway International, both in Denver. At Steamway he built carpet cleaners until 1981, when he bought one and started King's Carpet Care with his wife. Jim and Bonnie ran their business for 36 years until Jim was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and he could no longer work. With just the two of them working so closely together, they were seldom apart.
Jim was passionate about deer and elk hunting, water skiing, and bowling. He learned to water ski one weekend in the summer of 1973 and by the next weekend he owned his own boat. He also started bowling in a league at Lucky Lanes about 20 years ago and bowled until the beginning of the year.
However, his greatest passion was roller skating at Wagon Wheel. He was an excellent skater and shared his love for skating with his daughter, often skating together at least twice a week. When the rink discontinued Wednesday evening skates, Jim organized a skate party on Wednesday nights for adults to enjoy the rink with him. He skated until about four years ago and missed it dearly, having made many friends at Wagon Wheel throughout the years.
Jim could fix anything that needed fixing. He especially enjoyed repairing computers and woodworking. He built bread boxes, recipe boxes, and even built a garage. If he set his mind to it, there was nothing he couldn't accomplish.
Jim is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Jamie (Jeff) Herndon; grandson, Henry; brother, Johnny (Janice) King of Fort Lupton; sister, Trish (Ron) Schlatter of Loveland; and brother, Paul (Holly) King of Port Hadlock, Washington; plus numerous nephews and nieces. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws Phil & Martha Weber.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held on the 19th of June at the Fort Lupton Rec Center (203 South Harrison Street). Open house from 1:30-4:30pm. Casual dress.
