James Kittrick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2025.
Jim Kittrick died on January 18th at home. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to James and Anita (Kasper) Kittrick. He was married to Lucy Neff Kittrick from 1953 until her death in 2021.

Jim earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in Soil Science, working his way through college with summer agricultural jobs. He retired from Washington State University in 1989 after 34 years as a Professor of Soil Science, and was Chairman of the WSU Environmental Science program for three years. He published over 80 scientific articles, trained graduate students and taught graduate courses in soil minerology and soil chemistry. His research in clay minerology has been useful for scientific investigations of ancient climate studies, African volcanic sediments, oil drilling muds and nuclear waste depository design. He was a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy.

Jim was a longtime member of the Sierra Club. He headed a successful effort to establish the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness area in 1978. He testified before Congress several times.

Jim was a long-time member of the Klahane Hiking Club of Port Angeles, and served as president for two years. In his time on the peninsula, he hiked the majority of the trails of Olympic National Park with cherished companions. He also regularly rode the Discovery Trail where he made many friends. He was a strong believer in the value of cookies and exercise.

Survivors include his daughter, Carol Kittrick of Port Angeles and son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Debra Kittrick of Redding, California and grandchildren Brian Kittrick of Monterey, California and Kara Kittrick of Renton, Washington.

When we are out on the Discovery Trail we still often think of Jim and remember seeing him so many times on his trike. His cheerful presence is still alive on the trail. We miss him.

Jim was one of the best people in the Klahhane Club. It was a pleasure and an honor to know him.

My husband and I regularly ride the trail and often saw Jim out on his trike. We often stopped for a short conversation. He was such an inspiration and it was always a pleasure to wave and chat with him. He was always smiling and happy to be out on the beautiful trail. His absence will be missed but we will not forget his presence.

I met Jim on the ODT trail in Sequim in 2020 when I moved here from Seattle.
I have met so many people walking on the trail and many are very dear friends, but when I met Jim, it was different.
He brought so much joy and inspiration to the trail and myself.
I gave him a nick name.( Jim dandy)
He was an icon on the trail.
He was known as 3 wheel Jim also.
He bought a new bike a few years back and I bought him a bright new flag and a chain cleaner for one of his birthdays along with a card signed by many of his friends on the trail.
Hi face was priceless when he received it.
He teared up, as I told him that I wanted him to be safe and seen as he rode his many miles from home to the Nature Center almost everyday.
His smile and our conversations through the years will be forever in my .
He was light and I will miss him dearly.
