James Koher Obituary

He was born on November 27, 1968, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Stephen and Rosalie (Tarney) Koher.
He graduated from Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and attended Michigan University before graduating from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science.
Jim obtained his Fellow of Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation in 1999 and worked in the insurance industry throughout his career. He most recently spent 13 years with Homesteaders Life in Des Moines, Iowa where he was Executive Vice President and Chief Actuary. He was also President and co-owner of Brighter Future Holdings, LLC, along with his wife, Chanda Koher.
He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a loyal friend, and a forward thinker. He enjoyed hiking, skiing, snorkeling, and traveling. He also enjoyed music, concerts and plays, sports events, playtime with his granddaughter, and just relaxing with his family and dogs.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Chanda R. (Smith) Koher, of Urbandale, Iowa, whom he married July 28, 2001; stepson, Jerrod Goldberg, of Urbandale, Iowa; three stepdaughters, Andrea L. Mumm, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Jessica M. Mumm of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Nichole R. Zacharias of Fort Collins, Colorado; mother, Rosalie A. Koher, of Fort Wayne, Indiana and two sisters, Christina M. Koher, of Angola, Indiana and Kelly C. Koher of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Also, surviving is his step-granddaughter, Korra L. Kubik of West Des Moines, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen R. Koher of Angola, Indiana.
A memorial gathering will be held from 3-5 p.m., Saturday, February 26th at Iles Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines, Iowa.
Memorials may be made to United Way and The Salvation Army.

Jim Koher was a good man who we worked with through Homesteaders for many years in product development for our marketing company PFP. He was always there to help and became a good friend. As I sit here thinking about him, I can remember his smile... and his laughter - we had a good time together in the boardroom, at many dinners and relaxing with a drink. He will be missed.
