James Laws Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary on Feb. 25, 2026.
James Irvin Laws, Sr. (also known as "Stickman"), 73, of Galveston, Texas, was born on March 29, 1952, to Andrew Lee Laws, Sr. and Loyce (Nolan) Laws. He was the third of five children. He peacefully transitioned on February 19, 2026, at UTMB John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. James was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest sister, Joyce Washington; and his youngest brother, Marc Laws.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 53 years, Angela Laws; his three children, James Jr. (Rasheeda), Brandie Denton (Tim), and Tarance (Vyola); and his thirteen grandchildren, John Young (Chasidy), Crystal James (Demetrius), Dejá Laws, Kayla Mouton (Armani), Briona Simmons (PJ), Tim Denton II, Desiree Patterson, Zea Davis, Fermin Davis, Jr., Serenity Abdul-Hakeem, Kailee Laws, LeAnn Laws, James Laws III, and Jahleel Laws; his brother, Andrew Laws, Jr. (Floretta); his sister, Angie Laws; his aunt, Erma Jean "Babydoll" Smith; and a host of great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

James was a proud 1970 graduate of Ball High School in Galveston, Texas. He continued his education by completing two years at The Business School of Houston. At a young age, he began his professional career at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where he served for 32 years. Through dedication and strong leadership, he rose through the ranks and retired as Manager of Operations and Services in the Department of Information Services.

A devoted and faithful servant of God, James was a dedicated member of First Union Baptist Church in Galveston, Texas. He served faithfully as a Trustee, Brotherhood President, Restoration member, Culinary member, choir member, and in the Male Chorus. His love for the Lord was evident not only in his service to the church but in the way he lived his life daily-with integrity, humility, and compassion.

James was more than a husband, father, and grandfather-he was a friend and mentor to many. He believed in guiding others, offering wisdom, encouragement, and steady support whenever it was needed. His presence carried strength and reassurance, and many sought him for counsel and direction.

Above all, James loved his family deeply. Quality time with family meant everything to him. Whether through conversation, laughter, shared meals, or simply being present, he cherished every moment. His greatest joy was seeing his family together, united in love, our motto, Strong Family Values.

James Irvin Laws, Sr.'s legacy of faith, leadership, love, and devotion to family, will live on in all who knew and loved him.
