James August "Jim" Lichatowich

Jim Lichatowich was born in South Bend, Indiana. He graduated from St. Joseph High School and joined the U. S. Marine Corps. After serving four years in the Marines, he married Paulette Wallace and they moved to Corvallis to attend Oregon State University majoring in fisheries.
Jim worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for the first half of his career holding positions of Chief of Fisheries Research and Assistant Chief of Fisheries. In 1991 he became an independent consultant. Since 1991, he has served on ten independent scientific review panels covering a geographical range from the Skeena River in British Columbia to the Sacramento River. He served for ten years on the Independent Scientific Review Panel and four years on Oregon's Independent Multidisciplinary Science Panel. In addition to several peer reviewed papers and book chapters, Jim has written two books: Salmon without Rivers: A History of the Pacific Salmon Crisis and Salmon, People, Place: A Biologists Search for Salmon Recovery. He co-authored a new book to be published in July 2024 titled Managed Extinction: The Decline and Loss of Salmon and Steelhead in the Columbia Basin and Pacific Northwest.
He was a self-taught woodcarver with a preference for carving birds and fish.
Jim and Paulette were married 59 years and have two sons, Jim (Sue) Lichatowich and Tim. Granddaughter is Ella Lichatowich. Siblings include Miriam (Ron) Ramsey, Tom (Lisa) Lichatowich, Betsy Mayhar, Joanne (Ted) Peters, Joseph Lichatowich, Timothy J. Lichatowich, William Lichatowich and Judy (Jim) Meirow.
Nieces and nephews are Mary Lichatowich Vrontakis, Irene Lichatowich Rodegerdts, Josephine Lichatowich Hanta, Elizabeth (Liz) Lichatowich, Andy Meirow, Kyle Meirow, and Jim Meirow, Amy Ramsey Gianella, Thomas Ramsey, Annie Peters Bremner, Sarah Jo Lichatowich, Brian Mayhar, Angie Lichatowich.
He was preceded in death by his parents August J. Lichatowich and Irene Penkala Lichatowich.
Memorial services will be held in early June.
