James M. Longanecker, known to many simply as Jim, of Connellsville, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, on Dec. 16, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and one-of-a-kind stories. Born on March 8, 1934, in Vandergrift, PA, Jim was the son of Raymond and Ida Longanecker and the proud graduate of Connellsville High School, Class of 1952. Jim's life was an adventure, one in which he lived to the fullest. He built a career in freight transportation, working with Super-Value, Maslin Freight, Quinn Freight, and Eastern Freight, where he was a proud member of Teamsters Local 30. Even after retiring, Jim's love for the road never waned; he enjoyed driving for Scott C's Auto Sale, continuing to connect with people along the way. But it wasn't all about work; Jim's true passions were the stories he collected and the experiences he shared along the way. A born storyteller, Jim could spin a tale that left everyone laughing or leaning in closer, eager for the next detail. His love of travel took him far and wide, whether camping with Beverly, his wife of 43 unforgettable years, or embarking on RV road trips that often led to unexpected adventures. They were longtime members of the Good Sam and Happy Wanderers camping clubs, where they turned strangers into friends and every journey into a cherished memory. Though he loved the open road, Jim was equally at home in the air or under the sea. A proud member of the AES Flying Club, he spent countless hours at Mt. Pleasant Airport, soaring above it all with his trademark grin. When he wasn't flying, Jim loved to scuba dive, exploring the depths with the same curiosity and sense of adventure that guided his life. And if there was a casino nearby, you could count on Jim to try his luck at the tables, often coming back with enough winnings to keep the next story alive. Jim's passion for connection extended beyond his travels. He loved nothing more than gathering family around a table, teaching his grandchildren his favorite games with a sly twinkle in his eye as he passed down his winning strategies and expert poker face. He volunteered at Geyer Theatre, made friends at the YMCA in Scottdale, and never missed an opportunity to brighten someone's day. Jim didn't just meet people, he made them feel like family. Faith was a constant in Jim's life. He found connection and comfort attending Paradise Church in Mt. Pleasant, living his values of kindness and service daily. Whether it was lending a hand, sharing a smile, or offering words of wisdom, Jim left his mark on the hearts of everyone he met. Jim is survived by the love of his life, Beverly (Lohr) Longanecker, who was not only his wife but his partner in every adventure. He leaves behind his children, son, David (Debra) Longanecker of Norwich, CT; daughter, Linda (Stephen) Buckel of Charlotte, NC; and bonus daughters, Lynn Ann (William) Carew of Carolina Beach, NC, and Cathie Jo (Douglas) Wrona of Charlotte, NC. He was the proud grandfather of Shayna Longanecker, Elizabeth Anderson, Nicholas Franks, Hailey Wrona, and Calie Wrona; and doted on his great-granddaughter, Olive Mae. His legacy also lives on in many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, William, Samuel, and Paul; and sisters, Betty Ryals and Dorothy Bittner, each of whom shared in his rich tapestry of memories. Jim's 90 years were a celebration of life itself, a love of good stories, the thrill of discovery, and the joy of sharing it all with those he loved. As we say goodbye, let us honor him by seeking out adventure, finding joy in the little things, and always leaving room for one more story. The family wishes to thank the kind staff at Scottdale Healthcare and Rehabilitation for their compassionate care during Jim's final days. There will be no public viewing or services.
