DAN 'BOOGIE' Winans
September 24, 2016
I'm having problems with this computer tonight and didn't write anything awhile ago when I went on the website.
I knew James since about the 5th or 6th grade. We knew a lot of the same people over the years. Gus lived several houses down from James. I considered James a good friend and we hung out together for several years as teenagers. James got to drive his Dad's Studebaker and would drive over and we'd go hang out at Gyro's drive-in, the Flame, or the Jet.
When we were younger and not driving cars (legally), James and Gus had dug a cool hide-out in the vacant lot next to his Dad's garage. That lot had a monster water tank on it that proudly stated: PALM HEIGHTS. When the Johnson grass weeds grew up real high, we could lounge around, listen to rock & roll music on a transistor radio, smoke cigarettes, and drink Cokes. The traffic on Theo couldn't see us. Maybe the smoke rising up out of the high weeds once in awhile? Nobody bothered us.
James and I lost contact over the years. I moved all over the place but always ended up back in San Antonio. The memories I have of my pal, James Mangham are all happy and we never had any beefs with one another. We were very much alike in some ways, we enjoyed our own company, had our own personal thoughts and interests, and did not like to be in a crowd of people. Most of our Southside pals were similar in that regard.
He was a good friend and had a good sense of humor. His parents were always nice to me when I came over to their house.
So all I have to say to James is: "Via Con Dios, Amigo"
We'll all be following along to where you are one of these days.
