James Eugene Matuzak, known affectionately as Jim, passed away peacefully at My Michigan Medical Center in Alpena Michigan. He was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many with his kind heart and hardworking nature.
Jim was born on August 23, 1940, to the late Herbert and Gertrude (Filipiak) Matuzak in Alpena, Michigan, where he spent his early years before embarking on a journey through life. After graduating from Catholic Central High School in 1958, Jim proudly served in the United States Army from 1959 - 1962, stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany as a dedicated machinist.
Following his military service, On November 10, 1962, Jim married the love of his life Karen McQuarrie. They were married 54 years until she preceded him in death in 2017. Jim dedicated over 35 years of his life to working for Fletcher Paper Company until his well-deserved retirement in 2000. His commitment and work ethic were commendable, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the company.
Jim's passion for life extended beyond his career. He found joy in various hobbies such as golfing, spending time at his camp, hunting, fishing (especially participating in the brown trout tournament), and enjoying the outdoors. His competitive spirit shone through his love for bowling and golf which led him to achieve significant milestones including three holes-in-one and numerous prestigious awards like the City Open Championship and Men's Club Championships.
He was survived by two sons, Charles (Shelley) Matuzak, Allen (Jean) Matuzak, grandchildren, Megan (Jimmy) Brown, Kaylee Matuzak, Marissa Matuzak, great grandchildren, Matthew Brown, and Angela Newcomer, siblings, Richard (Carol) Matuzak, and Cynthia (Randy) Hartman, numerous nieces and nephews, and his faithful fur companion Molly. He was preceded in death by his wife Karen, a son Steven Allen Matuzak, grandson Michael Howard, a great grandchild McKenna Huber, and a brother Gary (Annie) Matuzak.
A man of integrity and compassion, Jim will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on through the stories shared by those whose lives he has touched. Jim was known for his imaginative story telling ability and always made others laugh.
Services to celebrate Jim's life will be held at the A.E. Ross Funeral Home in Alpena, Michigan; visitation on Monday, June 24th from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM followed by a memorial service starting at 6:00 PM. In honoring his legacy, let us cherish the moments shared with Jim and continue to embody the values he held dear – kindness, hard work, and a love for life. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution to Alpena Senior Citizens Center or The Angel Fund at Alpena Veterinary Clinic.
