When we first started reenacting Jim was always so kind and nice to us when we were total novices. Through the years he always greeted us warmly and welcomed us to the 44th VA campfire. He was certainly the best choice to follow Chuck as commander of Longstreet's Corps. Even after he left reenacting, he never left our thoughts. He was one of the truest gentleman ever met. He will be missed. David & Joy DeMatteis

My wife and I will miss Jim. We always looked for him as we came to each reenactment. He was always very pleasent and cordial. We think he was a fine gentleman and officer. His knowledge and background of history and reenacting was extensive. May the Lord comfort all of his family in this time of grief.
When my time comes to cross the river, I hope to look into the distance and see the Flags of Longstreets Corps., and meet him again.
Goodby Jim, but never forgotten.

I will always have many fond memories of Jim, from his days as Captain of the 44th Va, Longstreet's Corps Commander, & of course, not quite a few weekends during many reenactment events, especially those at Meadow Farm!! He was always a welcoming face for this "token local yankee", & always had kind words, & an invitation to share food, & good times around their campfire!! Of course, he always was one of the first to give me a good ribbing, especially once he found out about my nickname!!! I will never forget his warmth, kindness, & good heart, & he will always have a very special place in my heart!! Please know that Jim, & his entire family will always be strongly, & fondly remembered in my thoughts & prayers!!

My late husband was in the Confederate Marine unit that stood guard at General Maupin's headquarters. These are words that were spoken at my husband's funeral, and I'd like to repeat them here for General Maupin:

"He's not really gone, you know. He's just gone on ahead to pick out our campsite...up on the hill...in the shade of the oak trees...not too close to the horses...not too far from the sutlers. He's pitched his tent and he's sitting by the campfire waiting for the rest of us to arrive. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the coffee's on the fire, and it's not going to rain. It's going to be a good event."

I met Jim shortly before he was "drafted". At the time I was a member of Lee-Jackson Camp 1. Although I thought I was one of the few that honored their special Southern heritage, when Jim became aware of this it he was always excited to discuss the history and reverence for those who came before us. My memories of Jim will be that of a Southern Gentleman. God speed my friend.

My deepest condolences go out to the Maupin family. His family and mine shared many an enjoyable moment in the Civil War camps. Jim and I were very closely involved in Civil War re-enacting. At the Gettysburg reenactments Jim commanded the Southern forces and I the Federal. He was a true son of Virginia and a most honorable man. His family and all his many friends will miss this noble man.

The family and friends are in my prayers I only knew Jim through my daughter in law Grace Floyd. I was touched with his involvement with the re-inactment of the Civil War he and I talked at length about that one time. I know he will be missed by everyone.

I am truly saddened. I knew Jim for more than twenty years. I'll always remember his smile when he saw me or other friends. We served together on the reenactment battlefield. I will cherish the memory of his friendship and laughter. Jim was a true Confederate gentleman and a good commander on the field. I'll miss him always.

May God bless Jim and bless his family in mourning. As a private in the Confederate Marines I had the honor and privilege of assisting in his headquarters guard detail. The re-enacting world has lost a good man. May he rest in eternal peace.

I first met Jim through our commercial business relationship. You coluld always count on Jim to do what he said he would and know that it would be done correctly. He shared many of his fond memories with me about the joy and excitement he had as a re enactor. I knew when I first met him that Jim was a man of honor and integrity - a true Southern gentleman. Our country has lost another tremendous man of honor.

My deepest sympathies to Jim's family at this time of sadness. It was a privledge to have known Jim, my family and I have only known Jim for about 4 years and considered him as part of our family. He was always there for anyone who needed him; he was a Great man and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this time. Jim will always be in the thoughts of everyone who knew him and will be missed deeply.

As the leader of the old 44th, Jim led us through dozens of battles from Pennsylvania to Florida to Western Tennessee. We all fought together through the 125th anniversary battles and I was really looking forward to Jim leading us again as the 150th anniversary approaches. That was not to be but Jim will forever be the heart and soul of the old 44th. Rest well Captain.

I am saddened that we will never again see our comrade, Jim, in the camps and on the field with his beloved Longstreet's Corps. I pray his family may be comforted in this dark time. Jim was a gentleman and friend who will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathies are extended to Jim's family. I had the honor and privledge of knowing Jim while he was employed with W.E. Duke & Sons and Godsey & Son. Jim always conducted himself as a gentleman and always performed to the highest standards. Both professionally and personally, he was one of the finest people I have ever known. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Jim got me into re-enacting with the 44th Va. I enjoyed being with him at events and the close friendships I have made with the other men in the unit because of Jim.

To Jim's family, May God support you with his comfort and love, trust in God and I know he will grant you peace. Think of Jim often, as you remember him from time to time and the breeze that touches your cheek will be his spirit paasing by you.

To My Friend Jim, God knows my heart is sadden to lose an old and dear friend such as you. As I was told of your death, I thought of Stonewall Jackson's last words, they are now meant for you my friend.

Jim was a very close friend to me for many years. I was even his "body double" on the re-enactment field as men would come to me on the white horse I rode and called me "General", it became a big joke in the Corps and we had so much fun with it. Jim was always there to listen to others concerns and I always admired him for his ability to bring people together when they had differences. I learned so much about life from him and we often talked in his garage over a good cigar about so much. I will miss my friend as you his family will as well. Take with you the thought he lived his life to the fullest and that all the great memories we have shared will live on forever in the hearts of us all.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's friends and especially his family. I served only briefly as one of his staff officers, but he always had time to listen to everyone. Such a good man. He will be missed.
