Norfolk - James Maurice McDonald, born April 4, 1952, in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 73. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to his country, family, and community.

James was a proud veteran of the United States Submarine Service, where he honorably served for 22 and a half years. His deep love for the sea and submarines was evident throughout his career. Following his retirement from the Navy, he continued his commitment to national service, working as a military contractor refueling nuclear reactors.

He enjoyed fishing, James cherished the quiet moments spent by the water, casting a line and enjoying the beauty of nature, he also loved submarines. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his family, which brought him his greatest joy.

James was a valued member of several organizations, including Sub Vets, the Masons, and VFW Post 4809. His sense of camaraderie and dedication extended beyond his professional life into these communities. He also pursued higher education with two years of college, enriching his understanding and skills.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, James Whizzer and Mary Ann (Van Horn) McDonald. James is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn McDonald; his son, James McDonald, his son Brian McDonald; and his daughter, Stefanie Boebinger, her husband Corey and their children Carolina Drozen, her husband Daniel, Savanna Lord, her husband Eric, Jonathon Boebinger and Danielle Boebinger; and numerous brother's and sister's. He is also remembered fondly by many other family members and friends, who will miss his humor, kindness, and unwavering support.

A memorial service in honor of James's life will be announced at a later date. Cremation & Funeral Services of Tidewater is assisting the family during this difficult time. Friends and loved ones are invited to share their memories and express condolences at CandFServices.com.

In this time of mourning, we take comfort in knowing that James's spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His dedication, warmth, and love will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
