James McGee Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Affinity Memorial Chapel - Columbus on Apr. 25, 2025.
James Eugene McGee, affectionately known to all as "Jimmy," passed away in Columbus, Ohio, leaving behind a musical legacy that will echo for generations. Born July 13, 1970, at Grant Hospital to Jim Griffin McGee and Judy Carol Walker-McGee, Jimmy's life was defined by his extraordinary talent and unforgettable presence.
Growing up in Columbus, Jimmy attended Brentnell Elementary, Clinton Middle School, and Northland High School. His musical journey began early, leading the junior choir at Greater Emmanuel Church on Aberdeen with a powerful rendition of "Peter Walk Out on the Water."
From the moment he picked up a guitar, he was unstoppable. Jimmy was a rock and roller, a blues man, and, above all, a master musician. Locally, he was considered an enigma and a legend, captivating audiences wherever he played. His performances were emotional rollercoasters - watching him play, you could see and feel his deep connection to every note. Jimmy was renowned for his charisma, humor, and ability to move a crowd; he truly knew how to make his guitar "talk." His artistry spanned R&B, Southern Soul, and Blues, and he drew inspiration from musical greats while forging a sound uniquely his own.
A prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Jimmy traveled internationally, sharing his gift across states and countries. He was a one-man band, equally skilled on drums, piano, and organ. His original compositions, including the heartfelt ballad "Bottom Line," captured life's struggles and triumphs, resonating deeply with listeners. Videos and recordings ensure his music will continue to inspire.
Jimmy leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Judy McGee; father, Jim McGee; sister, Jennifer Shaw (Devin); beloved daughters, Melody Sobella Hughes McGee and Maxine Love Hughes McGee; aunts Bonnie Walker Gray and Genia Hendricks; the mother of his children, Sabrina K. Hughes; and his adored nieces and nephews, Steffon, Karah, Niles, and Warren. And his great-niece Simone (aka Nina).
He is also remembered fondly by a wide circle of cousins, lifelong friends, fellow musicians, and devoted fans who became like family.
Jimmy's philosophy was simple: "Don't ever stop doing what you love to do. Make your moment count and be stern in your approach. That's the bottom line."The song has ended, but the melody lingers on. Jimmy's spirit, his laughter, and the music he shared will forever be treasured by all who had the privilege to know him or witness his magic.

I met Jimmy when he was just 14 years old. I was with his cousin Ryan and pregnant with little Ryan. Jimmy used to love coming to our house with his guitar and he would sit in the middle of the living room floor and play and sing with me. I was amazed by the talent that came from such a young "old soul". I used to ask him, boy what are you going to do with all this talent? Over the years he showed me what he would do. He became an Extraordinary Musical Supernova who would light up any space he performed in and inspired the masses with his Music that resonated deep from his soul.

I had the pleasure to do some work with him, doing the 9-5, on stage and in the recording studio. It was a joy to know him and love him. He is and will always be missed. Rest in Peace and Power Little Cousin.

I admired the connection to music that Jimmy had. Every time that I saw him in the community, I knew that he would out perform that last time I saw him. He was truly a blessing to my soul. Whether the lady was at the casino, underneath the purple rain, or only wanted to hear some down home blues this world will be no good without your songs...your voice and spirit will always be remembered. -Tiffany James

Melody (Bella) and Maxine McGee, loving daughters of the talented and gifted James Eugene McGee.

You guys have been on my heart. The Lord our God bore all of tour sorrow and heartache on the cross, when you feel the heaviness of grief, I pray that God to infuse you with His love, for LOVE (God) swallowed-up grief.

"For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."
Psalm 30:5 KJV

To the family of Jimmy McGee, my sons and I send our Deepest Condolences to you all. Jimmy was and always be a friend of mine I remember when I first heard and saw him play. It was a Tuesday night at the C&S Lounge, he walked in head up with his friend on his back. I asked if he was going to sign up for the talent show. Jimmy smiles with a slight smirk on his face and answered "Hell Yeah" and gonna turn this mother out. I laughed, he played and that was that.
He Turned The Mother Out.
Love and will miss your crazy laugh.
