I can still hear my cousin Jim´s voice-gentle, measured, kind, genuine. I could hardly believe the news that it has been silenced. Because I live so far away, in South Florida, I didn´t know the daily details of his difficult, courageous battle with lymphoma. My guess is that even if I lived in the same city, I would not have known because he likely shielded those he loved from the worst parts of his struggle.
Jim was one of my older cousins, my mother´s sister´s son and old enough to be my father. When I moved to Washington, DC, for a job right after I graduated from college, I was able to get to know Jim and his family better when I spent Thanksgivings in Virigina Beach. Jim joked that we were part of the "East Coast branch" of the Economy family since nearly everyone else lived in the Rocky Mountain West. I was so grateful to have family close by, and I looked forward to the holidays with Jim, Linda, and their kids. He also took the opportunity to give me a free dental cleaning!
Decades later and a few years ago, I was happy to connect with Jim again when his daughter Christina got married. He gave me a long, warm hug, and we talked about how important family is. He said that we needed to have a family reunion, and I agreed. Sadly, the time we think we have in endless supply got hijacked by routines and other "priorities." Although we might have a reunion, it will be smaller than I would have liked.
I am happy that Jim is reunited with his mother and father, Aunt Sotrea and Uncle Bill. He is pain free and at peace. I can still hear his gentle voice. It lives forever in my heart.

There is no friend I loved more or admired more than Jim. May his memory be for a blessing to all who loved him.
