James Keith Meyer was born on November 3, 1958 to Donald and Darlene (Becker) Meyer in Windom, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at The Windom Methodist Church. He started coin collecting at an early age and read LOTS of Louis L'Amour western novels. A fabulous hockey rink built in his back yard each winter brought tons of kids and some awesome boot hockey games. He started fishing at a young age. He played third base on his high school baseball team and graduated from Windom Area High School in 1977 with Honors.
Jim attended the University of Minnesota-Morris from 1977-1981, graduating with Honors and double majors in Math and Economics. He went on to complete a rigorous professional training program from the Society of Actuaries earning a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries certification while completing a 35-year career in the life and health insurance industry.
On September 8, 1990 he was united in marriage to Karen Stritesky at Luther Memorial Church in Minneapolis, MN. They became parents of two children, Sarah and Samuel.
Jim renewed his interest in numismatics (study and collection of coins, currency, etc.) when Sarah was an infant. He was active at many coin shows around the area. As his interest in numismatics grew, he became a member of the Northwest Coin Club, serving on the Executive Board at the time of his passing.
Jim became involved in baseball again when Sam started playing T-ball. First helping out with practices and then becoming an assistant coach. He also held positions on the Robbinsdale Little League Board. Many lifelong friendships were formed through his and Sam's involvement in baseball.
Besides his involvement in coins and baseball, Jim also enjoyed music of all kinds, good wine and bourbon. He treasured spending time at the cabin in Dassel, MN where he would fish, garden, or relax with friends and family around the campfire. Jim also enjoyed traveling to Florida (Disney) when the kids were young, up north (Brainerd Lakes or Leech Lake areas on fishing trips with the guys) and to Arizona during Minnesota's cold winter months. He always looked for ways to bring people together for fun with good food, great music, amazing wine; and did so quite successfully.
Jim died unexpectedly on October 19, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Darlene. Jim is survived by his wife Karen of Robbinsdale, MN; daughter Sarah of Mankato, MN; son Samuel of Robbinsdale, MN; brother Robert (Karen) of Mankato MN; sister Joanne of Eden Prairie, MN; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Jim will be remembered as a kind and loving husband and father as well as a generous and treasured friend.
You are loved and missed Jim!
