SALEM - James L. Miller, a treasured soul, known for his handy skills and a heart full of kindness, passed away peacefully January 4, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by his family. Born on January 20, 1934, in Salem, Ohio, he was the son of the late Paul and Olive (Stackhouse) Miller. His roots remained deep in Salem, where he was a lifelong resident, leaving warm memories etched in the hearts of his loved ones.
James served his country with honor and pride as a member of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict War. After his service, he continued to contribute to his community through his work at Deming Manufacturing and as a self-employed handyman. He possessed a rare blend of practicality and creativity, becoming a cherished "Mr. Fix-It" in his neighborhood. No task was too big or small for James, and he often expressed his contentment with life by sharing his signature phrase, "I'm happy."
A master of melodies on the harmonica, James found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether he was strumming out a tune or piecing together a new project, he did so with a smile, exemplifying both his friendly nature and his remarkable ability to brighten the lives of those around him.
James' memory will be lovingly remembered by a family that he dearly loved. He is survived by his son, Charles (Shelley) Miller, and his caring daughter, Kimberly (David) Casto. James' legacy continues through his six grandchildren, Andrew (Courtney) Nannah, Britney (Daniel) Leffler, Sean Casto, Kaitlin (Kyler) Smith, Cody Miller, and Noah Miller, who will carry forward the values he instilled in them. His five great-grandchildren, Rory Nannah, Jantzen Nannah, Carter Smith, Remi Smith, and Axel Miller, will know him through the cherished stories that will be passed down through generations.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Christina (Hite) Miller, to whom he was married for over 67 years before her passing November 24, 2024, their reunion in eternity is a comforting thought to all who loved them. James was also preceded in death by his sister, Patsy Regal.
Friends and family will have the opportunity to bid their final farewell to James on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Stark Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral service to celebrate James's life will commence at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Rowley officiating, followed by interment at Grandview Cemetery. It will be a time to reflect on how James touched each life with his kindness and friendship, and to honor a life well-lived.
