James Willie Mills, 74, of Columbus, Georgia, peacefully departed this life on Monday, July 28, 2025, at his residence. He was born on June 23, 1951, in Stockton, Maryland, to the late Anna Mae Mills and Navie Rowley.

James attended and graduated from Worcester High School in Newark, Maryland, in 1970.

He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973, stationed in Germany. During his service, he received an honorable discharge, along with the National Defense Service Medal and recognition as a Sharpshooter (M16).

Before relocating to Columbus, Georgia, James was employed by Salisbury University as a Maintenance Supervisor. He also worked with the Wicomico County Board of Education, among other companies. After moving to Columbus, he continued his career in maintenance and later retired from St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

In January 2002, James became a devoted member of New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served faithfully in several roles: Trustee, Treasurer, Usher Board Treasurer, and Custodian. One of his favorite hymns was "Too Close to the Mirror."

James had a deep love for building, painting, and fishing. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and had a special affection for animals.

Loving memories will be cherished by his daughter, Nikieta Mills; son, Derrick Mills (Kamilah); beloved dog and companion, Chief; grandchildren, Jakia Mills and Jacori Cannon; sisters, Ernestine Mills, Sharon Mills, and Margaret Smith; brother, John Wallop; sisters-in-law, Mary Mills and Doris Mills; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by seven brothers: Joe Mills, Eugene Mills, Clinton Mills, William Mills, Oliver Mills, Royce Mills, and Navie Rowley Jr.; and three sisters: Marie Sturgis, Dorothy Dix, and Barbara Cross.

Lovingly Submitted, The Family
