James Moncure Obituary

Published by Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel on Jan. 17, 2012.
MONCURE, James Gordon Moncure Sr., beloved husband and father, died at home on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at age 84. Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Betty Jean Moncure; his daughter, Martha Lee Germain (Steve) of Powhatan, Va.; his son, James Gordon Moncure Jr. (Roseanne) of Deltaville, Va.; and his grandson, Taylor Ross Germain of Powhatan, Va. He is also survived by his brother, Henry Moncure of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon served in the United States Navy during WWII. He spent his business career with Goldberg Company of Richmond, Va. Gordon never met a person he didn't like and no one met Gordon without feeling "fine as a frog's hair." In addition to Powhatan, Va., he also maintained a residence in Virginia Beach and formerly Hatteras, N.C. He was a member of St. John's Church in Chester and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Powhatan. He also was a member of Chester Masonic Lodge #94 and the Lions Club of Chester, Va. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2245 Huguenot Train, Powhatan, Va., with burial at St. Luke's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Gordon would prefer a contribution be made to St. Luke's Church in his memory. The Good Lord was willing and the creek did rise; and Heaven is all the better.Turn your hat around, Gordon, so we think you're coming back.

Betty Jean, James jr ... This is a huge shock to find the passing of your husband and father. I found this Obits as I was looking for his phone number to give him a call to let him know I was living in Dares Beach, Maryland --- 100 yards from the Chesapeake Bay. Gordon, I am sorry for being late as this is one of my greatest losses. God be with you and your family. Gordon was not only my Boss, but one of my best friends and he will be sorely missed. My 79th birthday was on the 16th January 2012

Dear Betty Jean, Lee, Jim, and family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your husband, and Father. He was one of the nicest, funniest, happiest, and loving persons I have ever known, and always made you feel happy in his company. I remember having the best times when he and his brother Dick were together. I hope all the wonderful memories you have of him will help provide you some comfort during this sad and difficult time, and please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
