James Talmage Monroe, 72, of
Enfield, CT passed away on December 9, 2025. Born September 7, 1953, in
Paterson, New Jersey, Jim spent his early years in New Hampshire before building a full and vibrant life across several states. He most recently made his winter home in Bowling Green, Florida, where he cherished the warmth of his community and the friendships he found there. A talented chef, Jim trained at the Culinary Institute of America and devoted his entire professional life to the food industry. His passion for cooking and hospitality touched countless people over the years, both in his career and at home - where he delighted in sharing meals, stories, and laughter with those he loved.
Jim had an adventurous spirit. He enjoyed boating, sailing, camping, and traveling, and he embraced retirement with boundless energy. He journeyed across the country three times and completed memorable sailing voyages - traveling from Rhode Island to Lake Champlain and later navigating from Champlain through the canals of New York State into Ontario and on to Montreal before returning again. He took great pride in having made these remarkable trips with his wife, Ruthanne, by his side.
One of Jim's greatest joys was teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish and spending peaceful time at Otis Reservoir. His family was the heart of his life, and he cherished every moment with them.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Ruthanne, and by his five children: John Nieroda and his wife Aimee, Tracey Nieroda Outlaw and her husband Bryan, Melanie Fisher and her husband Ed, Nicole Nieroda, and Benjamin Monroe and his wife Anne. His family gave him 18 loving grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Jim is also survived by his brother, David Nichols and wife Debbie, along with Jim's nieces and nephews. He held a deep affection for his extended family, and the bonds he shared with them brought him tremendous joy throughout his life. He was previously married to Carole Monroe, with whom he shared 18 years of his life.
Jim's two beloved dogs, Lily and Lucy, were his faithful companions and brought him daily happiness - sharing in his walks, adventures, and quiet moments at home. Jim's warmth, generosity, adventurous heart, and the love he showed to his family - human and animal - will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Relatives and friends may join his family on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 for a period of remembrance of Jim from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut Blood Center Inc. P.O. BOX 419354 Boston, MA 02241-9354
