James E. Moore Sr., beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at the age of 83.

Born on July 16, 1942, in Cairo, Illinois, he was the son of Robert Moore Sr. and Eula Parks. James was a proud graduate of Cairo High School and dedicated his professional life to serving as a correctional officer in law enforcement. His commitment to his work was matched only by his passion for music. James married Carolyn Lovelace, the mother of his children, when she was just 16. Together, they shared 21 years of Holy Matrimony, devoted to raising their family.

James was a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, helping to integrate schools in Cairo, Illinois. He walked alongside the great Martin Luther King Jr., advocating for justice and equality. As the State Laymen President of Illinois, James played a vital role in community leadership. In 1962, he captured historic moments with the late Senator John Lewis as he entered office; one of those photographs is now preserved in the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution.

An excellent singer, James found joy in sharing his talent with others, often bringing light to any gathering with his heartfelt performances. He was a devoted Deacon of New Salem Baptist Church, where he found community and a sense of belonging.

James is survived by his six children: Rodney Moore (Alishia), Jodie Moore Barbin (Anthony), Gary Moore, Denise Williams, Latrice Williams, and Carol Williams. He was a proud grandfather to 22 grandchildren, who will always cherish his loving spirit and the memories they created together. He leaves behind his siblings, Jackie Parks, Janice Gavin, Kay Lowe, and Carla Lowe, along with a special circle of friends, including his best friend James Washington, and special nieces Yolanda Minor and Taryn Williams. He is also remembered fondly by a host of other relatives and friends who were touched by his kindness and warmth.

James was preceded in death by his parents, his son James Moore Jr., and several siblings: Louis Parks, Andrew Ford, Robert Moore Jr., Melvin Moore, William Moore, Barbara Phillips, Clarence Moore, and Vera Parks.

His legacy of love, laughter, and song will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
