James Nelson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, Inc. on Jan. 11, 2026.
James Carter Nelson Sr., 83, of Meriden, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Oxford, North Carolina, and lived a life rooted in family, mentorship, and encouragement.
James was predeceased by his parents, James Matthew Nelson and Alice Mildred Nelson; his former wife, Mary Helen Nelson; and his brother, Allen Nelson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Mary J. Bacote; his children Marquita L. Nelson, Carla M. Nelson, James C. Nelson Jr. (wife Jamie Nelson), Crystal L. Nelson, Alicia M. Johnson (husband Harding Johnson), Hilary Garzarelli (husband Mark Garzarelli), John Nelson, and Jason Nelson (wife Johanna Nelson); his stepchildren Brian Bacote (wife Kelly Bacote), Clinton Bacote (wife Michelle Bacote), and Kim Bacote; his sister, Barbara Lucas, (husband, Willie Lucas); 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom were a constant source of pride and joy in his life.
James was a graduate of Maloney High School, where he excelled in soccer, demonstrating the athleticism and teamwork that would later define much of his life. He dedicated many years as a youth baseball coach, earning him the beloved nickname "Coach." Coaching was more than a title to James-it was a calling. He took great pride in uplifting others, always making sure people knew how great they were and celebrating their accomplishments.
Outside of coaching, James enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He loved to cook and grill, proudly serving as the family's grill master at gatherings filled with laughter and togetherness. He also enjoyed playing golf, appreciating both the game and the camaraderie it brought.
Known for his kindness, encouragement, and genuine interest in others, he had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. His legacy of love, support, and mentorship will live on through the many lives he touched.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a dedicated coach, and a man whose words and actions left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

To: Carter's entire Family and Friends, my sincere sympathy on his recent passing. I played baseball with Carter on Malerba Royal Master's Little League baseball team many years ago. Carter was an exceptional athlete and outstanding teammate. I often think of those wonderful times and what became of my teammates.
I am saddened to learn of his passing. Farewell, Carter.
