James "Jim" Newell, age 83, of Reading, passed away in Jackson on Sunday, January 19, 2025. He was born to Orlin W. and Estelle N. (Marsh) Newell in Reading on February 27, 1941. He married Sandy Bowman on March 12, 1960, and she survives.
Jim graduated from Reading High School class of 1959 then went on to study at Hillsdale College and earned his master's degree from Eastern Michigan University. He was a dedicated teacher, counselor, and coach for Reading, Pittsford, and Litchfield schools. He worked in education for 30 years till he retired. After retirement, Jim started the Jim Newell Excavating company and was an avid farmer his whole adult life. Jim was a man of many talents, of which he enjoyed hunting, wine making, coaching sports, and rescuing dogs. He also enjoyed music of all kinds, camping, and supporting the Detroit Pistons and Lions. Above all, Jim enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Sandy Newell; two children, Patti (Marty) Hampton, and Ron Newell; and five grandchildren, Emily, Foster, Austin Hampton, and Mitchell and Nicholas Wert.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and 3 brothers, Lester, Terry, and David Newell.
Memorial services for James "Jim" Newell will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Reading with Reverend Al Fenstermaker officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, from 4:00-6:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will take place in the spring at Maplewood Cemetery in Reading.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Animal Aid of Branch County, Hospice of Hillsdale County or Henry Ford Jackson Hospice.
