Mr. James "Jim" Bryson Owen, Sr., 80, of Newnan passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024 at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born April 19, 1944 in Hampton, Virginia, to the late Luther T. and Frances C. Owen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Charles Lawter, Janice Lawter Owen, JoAnne Owen Adams, Gary Owen and Wanda Owen Ledford.
Jim grew up in Hampton, Virginia and was a 1963 graduate of Hampton High School. He was a proud 1972 graduate of The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. Jim moved to the Atlanta area in 1972 to begin his career as a welding engineer for M.T. Gilliland, Inc. He went on to have a 50 plus year career with M.T. Gilliland. In November 1976, he and his wife Kathy moved to their forever home in Newnan to raise their children and enjoy their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim enjoyed woodworking, taking care of his property and home, raising and hunting coonhounds, fishing, gardening, and living a good life with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim managed cancer for the last twenty years of his life with courage and grace. His deep faith gave him the assurance that God was in control and would carry him home.
Survivors include wife, Kathleen Guillotte Owen of Newnan; son James Bryson Owen, Jr. and wife Liberty of Smyrna, daughter Leslie Owen Hamlin and husband Shawn of Dunwoody; sister Brenda Owen Gerczak and husband Melvin of Kill Devil Hills, NC; grandchildren James Bryson Owen, III and wife Colleen of Atlanta, Abbygail Owen Cook and husband Jackson of Mableton, Evie Ann Owen of Smyrna, Owen Roy Hamlin and Lillian Kathleen Hamlin of Dunwoody; great-grandchildren Stella Claire Owen and Harrison James Cook.
A celebration of Jim's life for family and friends will be held at a later date.
