James Pappas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2025.
James (Jim) G. Pappas was born on January 2, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to George and Constance Pappas. He was the second of two sons. His father, an immigrant from Greece, and his mother owned and operated a grocery and liquor store on the South Side of Chicago. From a young age, Jim and his brother George worked in the family store-bagging vegetables, stocking shelves, and delivering groceries-lessons in work ethic that would stay with him for life.

Jim attended Morgan Park Military Academy and went on to study at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he was captain and most valuable wrestler of the varsity team. He continued his education at Loyola University, earning both a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in Latin American history. He later completed his doctorate (Ed.D.) at Nova University. He also studied at the University of Chicago through a National Defense Education Act Fellowship.

In 1960, Jim met the love of his life, Denise, a student from Greece studying abroad. They married in 1964 and spent more than four decades together until her passing in 2006. Summers were often spent traveling across Europe, especially to Athens to be with Denise's family. Together, they raised two children, Tina (Rob) and George (Hannah), and were blessed with four grandchildren: Melina, James, Theron, and Sophie.

Jim's career in education spanned more than 50 years. He began teaching history and counseling students in the Chicago Public Schools, where he also founded and coached the Hyde Park High School wrestling team. He later joined Chicago State University, serving in roles ranging from professor to Vice President for Student Affairs. In 1980, Jim and his family moved to Ellensburg, Washington, where he became Dean of Admissions and Records at Central Washington University (CWU). Over his long career at CWU, he served as Interim University President, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing, Dean of Academic Services, professor of education, and faculty member in the William O. Douglas Honors College. He also coordinated the Academic Service Learning program and mentored countless students and young professionals.

Wrestling was another lifelong passion. Jim coached university teams, officiated at high school and college matches, and supported athletes at the state and national level. Many of the athletes he coached remained lifelong friends.

Jim and Denise shared a deep commitment to community service. They sponsored foreign exchange students, supported charities, and were active in the arts. Jim himself served on numerous boards and organizations, including the United Way of Kittitas County (as Campaign Chair), the United Ways of Washington (as President), the Washington State Combined Fund Drive (as Co-Director, appointed by the Governor), the Rotary Club of Ellensburg (twice President), HopeSource (twice Chair), the CWU Foundation (Vice Chair), Kittitas Valley Health Hospital Foundation (Chair) and President of the Clymer Museum Board of Directors.

Jim was a teacher at heart. Even into his seventies, he continued to teach on a phased retirement. One of his greatest joys was leading study-abroad programs, taking more than 75 students to Greece and across Europe. He was an avid reader, a storyteller, a gardener, and an adventurer.

Above all, Jim cherished his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather. His wisdom, humor, and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.

Jim's legacy is one of service, education, family, and love. His life was full, his impact lasting, and his stories unforgettable.
