James Dennis Patrick, Sr.
Born March 1, 1942 – Chicago, Illinois
Passed August 22, 2025 – Batavia, Illinois
James Dennis Patrick, Sr. was born on March 1, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to James Earl Patrick and Frances Ellison.
Growing up in a difficult childhood, James learned early the value of steadiness and perseverance. At just 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving proudly as a military policeman for three years. Even in his youth, James showed the traits that would define his life: reliability, loyalty, and strength.
On New Year's Eve of 1964, James was set up on a blind date with Betty Grant. That night sparked a lifelong love story, and by December 1965 they were married. For the next 56 years, James and Betty shared a love like few others-raising their children, James Jr. and Patricia, and building an extraordinary life together in Batavia, Illinois. Their marriage was marked by laughter, faithfulness, and a devotion that never wavered.
In 1965, James began his career at General Mills, where he worked with unwavering dedication for 48 years until his retirement in 2013. His career, like the rest of his life, was marked by dependability and a steadfast work ethic. In 1972, James and Betty bought their home in Batavia. That house became the heart of the family-where birthdays were celebrated, anniversaries honored, holidays enjoyed, and everyday moments cherished. It was in that home, surrounded by the love he helped cultivate, that James passed peacefully at the age of 83.
James's life was not defined by grand gestures, but by the consistency with which he showed up-for his work, his family, and his friends. He was the steady hand, the loyal partner, the dependable father and grandfather. His hobbies reflected his thoughtful and patient nature: photography, chess, and especially cards. He loved the game of poker and even earned a place on the Senior World Poker Tour in 2009. Trips to Las Vegas brought him and Betty great joy, and his final visit in 2023 created memories his family will always treasure.
James is survived by his son, James (Christine) Patrick; his daughter, Patricia (David) Flowers; grandchildren Hailey (Andrew) Frits, Miranda Patrick, Grace Flowers, David Flowers II, Ashley Grant, Amber Grant, and Samuel Grant; great-grandson, Marshall Frits; great-granddaughter, Adrianna Grant; by his sister, Terri Lucas, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his brother, Gregory Patrick; his sister, Patricia Dabbert; his parents, James Earl Patrick and Francis Santos; and Timothy Grant.
James leaves behind a legacy of constancy, devotion, and love. His family and friends will remember him as a man who could always be counted on-a husband whose love for his wife never wavered, a father whose steady presence guided his children, a grandfather whose encouragement uplifted his grandchildren, and a friend whose loyalty never failed. His steady presence will be deeply missed, but his example will continue to guide those who loved him.
