James “Jimmy” Wilmore Payne, 76, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024. He was born on January 15, 1948, to Andrew Wilmore Payne and Louise Ragland Payne in Goochland, Virginia.

Throughout his life, Jimmy was known for his great work ethic, willingness to help others, and lighthearted sense of humor. He always put the needs of others before his own. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him.

Professionally, Jimmy excelled in the plumbing/steamfitter industry. His dedication and hard work earned him the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of his peers.

In his leisure time, Jimmy enjoyed playing his bass guitar, singing, spending time with his family, and camping in the mountains, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. 

Above all, Jimmy cherished his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather whose unwavering support and guidance will be deeply missed. His legacy of love and strength will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his three children and one daughter-in-law, Jim, David and Samantha, and Rachel. In addition to his children, he is survived by his two grandsons, Andrew and James and his brother, Donnie.  He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Mary, and his wife, Gayle.


A friends and family visitation night will be held at Normans Funeral Chapel in Goochland County, Virginia on Friday, May 10, 2024, where the family will be receiving guests from 6 to 8 p.m.  A graveside service will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Forest Grove Christian Church in Goochland, Virginia. Promptly following the graveside service, a celebration of life will be held at Perkins Baptist Church in Goochland, Virginia

Throughout Jimmy’s life, he has faced numerous health issues. But his unwavering faith in God and his determination to be the foundation of his family helped him overcome many obstacles. Jimmy will be remembered fondly, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was dearly loved and will be profoundly missed.
