James Peters Obituary

James "Jim" Peters
James "Jim" Peters was born on December 17, 1943, in North Platte, Nebraska, to Glenn and Mary Darlene Peters.
Jim spent his childhood in North Platte, where he became an Eagle Scout and proudly broke North Platte High School's record in the one-mile run. After graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning a degree in Pharmacy and joining the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. His strong faith earned him the nickname "The Pope" among his fraternity brothers.
In 1968, Jim moved to McHenry, Illinois, to start his career as a pharmacist. Over the years, he worked at Revco and Reliable Drug Stores in McHenry, as well as K-Mart Pharmacies in Zion and Round Lake. He was dedicated to his profession, but what mattered most to him were the friendships and connections he built with coworkers and customers alike.
On June 8, 1974, Jim married the love of his life Martha Thennes at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McHenry. Together, they built a loving and supportive marriage, each complementing the other's strengths. Jim's calm presence perfectly balanced Martha's vibrant spirit. Their life together was filled with family, friendships, and cherished memories.
Jim was a patient and steady father who was always supportive of Nancy's devotion as a mother and savored every round of golf he shared with Nathan. Nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his children and grandchildren, where his warmth and generosity were always evident.
Outside of work and family, Jim enjoyed golfing, bowling, and participating in long-standing poker and euchre groups. He valued the friendship and camaraderie as much as the games themselves. He was a loyal Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, a volunteer at the FISH food pantry, and an eager traveler. He especially loved spending time in Montello, Wisconsin, with Martha and the Thennes family.
Though comforted in knowing he is reunited with Martha, Jim leaves behind a legacy of love, patience, and kindness. His quiet strength and unwavering support touched all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Nancy Peters; his son, Nathan (Claire) Peters; grandchildren Tyler, Evan, Lexi, Conner, Kalena, Cambria, and Cassius; his sister, Mary Aupperle; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha, his parents, his brother George Peters, and his parents-in-law, Edward and Agnes Thennes.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Colonial Funeral Home in McHenry, IL from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church in McHenry, IL at 10:00 AM. The Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
