James "Jim"/ "Jimmy" William Porter, born October 10, 1939, in
Central, South Carolina, passed peacefully on January 18, 2026, in
Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 86.
Jim lived a vibrant life filled with adventure, resilience, and humor, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
After graduating high school in Whiteville, North Carolina, Jim moved to New York City, where he began his career in sales. This move marked the start of a remarkable journey that took him across the globe. Over the years, he built lasting relationships and had many worldly experiences that enriched his life with wisdom and unforgettable stories from the diverse places he traveled and the amazing friends he met.
In his 40s, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane Voorhees, and they welcomed three beautiful children. After her unexpected passing, Jim embraced the role of single father, pouring his heart into raising his kids while keeping Mary Jane's spirit alive.
A talented cook and music lover, Jim found joy in preparing meals for family and friends, turning gatherings into moments of warmth and connection. His love for music was evident through his participation in his high school glee club and as a member of the church choir, sharing his heart through song and laughter.
Jim is survived by his sister, Carol Worrell; sister-in-law, Linda Porter; and his nieces and nephews, including Meredith, Christi, Sarah, Kathy, Elizabeth, and Ashley, along with their families.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Kyle Porter, Emily Porter (Cesar Oyuela), and Erica Canaday (Jay Canaday), and his cherished grandchildren, Kannon Porter, Ava Canaday, and Barrett Canaday, who will carry forward his spirit of laughter and love.
Preceded in death by his parents, Velma Pressley Porter and William Porter; younger brother, Jerry Porter; and nephew, Press Porter, Jim is now reunited with those who left this earth before him, including his beloved wife, Mary Jane, whose memory he held close throughout his life.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of meaningful relationships, courage, and love. His presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
