Steve Porter, 79, of
El Campo, TX, went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ on March 13, 2026. He was born in
Appleton, Wisconsin on July 25, 1946 to Harry Eugene Porter and Verlee (Lee) Asman Porter, both WWII Navy veterans. After living in Savannah, Georgia briefly, he was raised in Houston and graduated from Memorial High School and was an Eagle Scout. Steve was a proud University of Houston Cougar and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Master of Business Administration from Houston Christian University. He married the love of his life Nancy Whitehead Porter on December 1, 1979, and they had four incredible sons.
Steve and his wife Nancy moved to Sugar Land from Houston to raise their family and made it their home for the next 40 years. Together they built a full life there, raising their four sons and later welcoming four daughters-in-law and nine grandchildren.
Steve spent nearly four decades with ExxonMobil, starting as a Computer Systems Engineer and ultimately retiring as a Global Information Systems Project Manager. Even in retirement, his commitment to serving others continued. From 2013 to 2021, he served the community as Sugar Land City Council Member for District 1, bringing the same thoughtfulness and dedication that marked his professional life.
Steve was also passionate about investing in people through his faith and community. He was excited to be part of the first committee that brought Young Life to Fort Bend County and led a cherished River Pointe Church home team for many years. Leading those home teams was a particular joy for him, allowing him to share his love of studying and memorizing scripture with others.
After completing his council service, Steve and Nancy moved to El Campo to be closer to their family, where they continued to stay actively involved in the community they cared deeply about.
Steve loved spending time with his family whether he was telling funny jokes, especially to his grands, attending school and sports events or just hanging out by the pool. He was fondly known for his legendary long shower routines and called "Cheese Head" due to his love for Cotswold Cheese and watching his beloved Green Bay Packers. Steve enjoyed travelling with friends here and abroad and learning to be a pilot to travel the skies.
His granddaughter Abigail described him best, "I learned a valuable lesson from my grandpa and that was to approach not only adversity and challenges with love and compassion, but also with joy and that is when they will mean the most to you. Grandpa was always so full of love – a true example of our Lord's grace and mercy."
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother, Joe. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons: Kirk (wife Tanya), Mike (wife Melanie), John (wife Blair) and Chris (wife Anastasia); his sister Christy Thompson and husband Steve of
Colorado Springs, CO; his brother-in-law Charles Whitehead and wife Diane of
Kyle, TX; his aunt Rebecca Martin of
Spring, TX; his beloved grandchildren: Jake, Abigail, Sophie, Harrison, Caleb, Thom, Sam, Davy, and Juniper, along with wonderful nieces and nephews and the dearest of friends.
The family wants to thank his doctors at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and his care givers with Family Tree and Enhabit Hospice.
Following a private graveside service at the family cemetery near Henderson, Texas, A Celebration of Life service will be held in the morning at 11 am on Thursday, March 26, 2025 at Grace Point Community Church in El Campo, 820 West Loop,
