James Ramey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Morris Funeral Home Inc on Feb. 23, 2026.
James Ramey Jr II, 73, of Wayne passed peacefully in the Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, South Carolina after numerous visits from beloved family February 22, 2026. Funeral services will be led by Rev. Garland Perry assisted by Rev. Greg Michels at Morris Funeral Home in Wayne, WV, Friday, February 27th at 1 p.m. with visitation 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens, Wayne, WV. He was born at home in Wayne to the late James Ramey and Barbara Adkins Ross, but raised by his special mother the late Louise Ramey. James (or Big Junior, as he was locally known) was a schoolteacher and coach, teaching and coaching various sports in Lincoln, Cabell, Mingo counties and retiring in Wayne County. He proudly entered the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam era serving in Okinawa. He is survived by his steadfast love of 53 years Virgina (Coleman), his daughters Elizabeth Slagel (Robert) of Ironton, OH, Linda (Charles) Goad of Ona, WV and son Brian (Natashia) of Simpsonville, S.C. He has an extensive line of siblings. Those he was preceded in death by are James Robert Ramey, Arlene (Ramey) Maynard, and Deborah (Ramey) Wallace and Augusta Davis. He is survived by his loving siblings: Charles Ramey, John Ramey, David Ramey, James Ramey III, Larry Ramey, Terry Ramey, Armilda Michels, Sally Pridemore, Nancy Bryan and Darrell Adkins. He is also survived by six grandchildren of whom he was deeply proud: Mason, Georgia and Lillian Slagel, Grant Goad and Hailey and Gabriella Ramey. James graduated Wayne High School in 1971 and later Marshall University in 1986. He loved all sports and was known for his natural strength, but he personally excelled in football receiving honorable state mention. He was a huge proponent of education and chasing one's dream. He particularly understood and had a huge soft spot for underprivileged youth. Therefore, in lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to the local boy's home, Stepping Stones Incorporated, P.O. Box 539, Lavalette, WV 25535
