James "Jim" Marvin Romm, 79, of St. Augustine, FL, formerly of Norfolk, VA, passed away on October 26, 2025, just shy of his 80th birthday. A Norfolk original, Jim owned J. Romm & Co. and had a gift for sending customers out the door feeling like a million bucks-"dressed to the nines," as he liked to say.
Jim's entrepreneurial streak showed early-a boy with a paper route, breeding Bedlington Terriers and selling needle threads door-to-door as a teenager; he was managing a shop barely out of high school. That same warmth and drive defined his long career and the many friendships he nurtured over a lifetime.
An optimist and born salesman, Jim turned setback into success, rebuilding his business following a devastating fire. He was fond of saying, "Tough times make tough people," and led by quiet example. A longtime fixture of Ghent's retail scene, he served his community through the Ghent Business Owners Association, the Kiwanis Club, and countless everyday acts of kindness.
A proud Maury High School graduate, he loved reconnecting with classmates to plan reunions and celebrate birthdays. Honoring his late brothers, Jack and Ed, he found meaning volunteering to drive cancer patients to their treatments.
Jim had a special gift for making people feel at ease. He listened without judgment, quick to find common ground and inject laughter into any conversation. He loved a party, a good story, and a trip to Vegas. Lovingly teased by family as a "high roller" at the Frontier, these trips were less about the casino and more about the shows, the lights, and the opportunity to make memories with friends and family.
In later years, Jim frequently gathered with friends for card games in Williamsburg and St. Augustine-filled with laughter, storytelling, and easy companionship. His good-natured warmth made everyone feel welcome. His presence brightened every room he entered.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Lizzie Romm, stepmother Helen Romm, brothers Ed and Jack, stepbrother, Emory Ferebee, dear friend Tommy Atkinson, and his loyal canine companions Miss Scarlet and Brandy. Jim is survived by his devoted spouse and partner of many years, Robert "Bobby" Stivers; sisters Betty (Buzz) Johnson and Gayle Donovan; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish forever his gentle heart and the joy he brought to their lives.
A graveside service, followed by a reception, will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk on November 14 at 11:30 a.m.
