James J. Royer, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply. His gentle presence, steady wisdom, quick wit, and unwavering love shaped the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born on July 28, 1936, in
Allentown, Pennsylvania, James grew up with a strong sense of purpose and curiosity that guided him throughout his life. He was a graduate of Lafayette College, where he excelled academically, was inducted into Eta Kappa Nu & Tau Beta Pi honor societies, and laid the foundation for a distinguished career in electrical engineering at Bell Labs. He earned five patents and the admiration of colleagues who valued his intellect, humility, and innovative spirit.
James lived a life rich with passions. He was a Bronze Life Master in duplicate bridge and an enthusiastic member of the Riesentöter Porsche Club, where he enjoyed autocross racing and the camaraderie of fellow drivers. His love of cars, especially his 914 and 911 Porsches was matched only by his fascination with open salt collecting, U control planes, and anything mechanical he could take apart and improve. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, skier, rockhounder, an expert rifleman, and lifelong fan of the Philadelphia sports teams. Some of his happiest memories came from hunting with his father, grandfather & son, accompanied by his loyal beagle, Socrates.
A man of remarkable energy, James embraced fitness long before it was fashionable. He began weightlifting in high school, earning awards for weightlifting and physique in 1956, roller bladed with enthusiasm, and remained a dedicated visitor to the fitness center several days a week for 27 years. His curiosity and sense of adventure carried him far beyond the familiar - he traveled annually, visiting 16 countries, camped often, and delighted in simple joys like ice cream and sharing gummy bears with those he loved.
James proudly served in the Pennsylvania National Guard, embodying discipline, responsibility, and quiet strength.
Above all, James was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Judith, who was his steadfast partner and companion through life's many adventures. He is also survived by his children: James Royer, Dianne Workoff (Dan), and Richard Royer (Kris); and later welcomed into his heart Charles Groder (Jane), Jill Lettice (David), and Karen Groder (Geno). His grandchildren Michael Workoff (Vanessa), Danielle Hartley (Dan), Richard Royer, Rachel Stevens (Yasin), Ryan Royer, Reilly Groder (Dylan), Reid Groder (Edward), and Charles Lettice brought him immense pride and joy. He was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Abigail Workoff and Archer Hartley, who brightened his later years.
James was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Amelia and siblings, Charles & John and Jim's wife of 40 years, Barbara.
James's life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, curiosity, and gentle leadership. He leaves behind a family who adored him and will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11a.m at St. Peter's Episcopal Church' 33 Throckmorton Street,
