James Runberg Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Crick-Christians Funeral Home - Lindsborg on Feb. 4, 2026.
James Edward Runberg, known to many as Jim, was born on June 24, 1936, in Lindsborg, Kansas, to Luther H. Runberg and Alice Fern Olivia (Peterson) Runberg. He grew up in Lindsborg alongside his two older sisters, Louanna Raben (Cyril) and Doris Ferguson (Darrell).

Jim attended Lindsborg schools and graduated from Lindsborg High School, where he distinguished himself as a scholar. Although he enjoyed playing basketball, his true passion was learning and academic achievement.

He went on to attend Kansas State University, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity as well as several engineering and honors engineering organizations. Jim earned his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, laying the foundation for a long and accomplished professional career.

Following graduation, Jim moved to Duncan, Oklahoma, to begin his engineering career with the Halliburton Company at its original headquarters. There, he worked in the FreightMaster Division, contributing to the development of what is essentially the shock-absorbing connecting system between railway cars. He later joined Otis Engineering, a Halliburton subsidiary, working in the oilfield industry. From this period of innovation, Jim holds a patent for a "Safety Valve with a Hydraulic Actuator."

Jim was later transferred to another Halliburton subsidiary, Brown & Root, in Houston, Texas. During this phase of his career, his work included projects in NASA construction and marine engineering-an experience that reflected both his technical expertise and the breadth of his professional contributions.

After retiring, Jim returned to Lindsborg to be near his roots and enjoy a quieter pace of life. When managing his household became more than he desired, he moved to Bethany Home, where he was delighted by the community he found. There, he formed meaningful friendships with both residents and staff, embracing this chapter of life with gratitude and grace.

Following an illness, Jim passed away on February 2, 2026. He will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, professional excellence, and the steady kindness he shared with those around him.

A Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 9, 2026 the Bethany Home Chapel, 321 N. Chestnut, Lindsborg, KS 67456. Interment and burial services will at Elmwood Cemetery before the funeral.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Jim Runberg Memorial. These may be sent to Jim Runberg Memorial, Peoples Bank and Trust, 201 S Main St, Lindsborg KS 67456
