James Henry Scarborough, Sr. born on December 11, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Idella Scarborough, peacefully transitioned on October 21, 2025 in Christiana Delaware.
After the passing of his mother, James – affectionately known as "Jim" – was lovingly raised by his siblings, Naomi (Nick) Moore and Edward (Junebug) Scarborough, along with a devoted father figure, Jim Bailey. All three preceded him in death.
Jim attended William Henry High School and went on to further his education at Delaware State College (now Delaware State University), where he majored in mathematics. Following graduation, he began his professional journey as a student teacher at William Henry High School in Dover, Delaware and later taught at Absalom Jones in Wilmington.
In 1958, Jim married the love of his life, Ellen Mosley, who also preceded him in death. From this beautiful union, four loving children were born.
After his years in education, Jim began a long and successful career at General Motors in Wilmington, Delaware where his leadership and dedication led to advancement into management. His career took him and his family to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before he was later transferred back to the Wilmington facility, where he remained until his retirement.
In 1995, Jim and Ellen moved to Harrington, Delaware to enjoy a quieter lifestyle. Even in retirement, Jim remained active, working for the Department of Safety and Homeland Security for the State of Delaware for a period of time.
Jim was the ultimate husband, father, and family man. Together with Ellen, he created a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. The family traveled across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in their RV, and after becoming empty nesters, Jim and Ellen continued exploring the world – flying, cruising, and RVing to destinations as well as traveling across Europe and beyond.
A man of many talents and interests, Jim loved playing the guitar, a passion he developed during college and continued as a member of the gospel group The Christian Echos. He also enjoyed woodworking, riding his motorcycle, and visiting casinos. A proud member of the Lions Club, Jim gave back to his community through volunteer service.
Jim's greatest joy was his family. He and Ellen hosted two family weddings in their backyard – those of their daughter Cindi to her husband Gary, and granddaughter Amber to her husband Dino. His grandson, James III, fondly recalls Jim participating in career day at William Henry Middle School, where Jim had once taught. He also served as a loving father figure to his grandsons, Alexis and Justin.
Jim's legacy of love, strength, and devotion lives on through his children: Lacinda (Gary) Stelzig, James Jr. (Tammy) Scarborough, Jeffrey Scarborough, and Katrina Scarborough; his grandchildren: Alexis (Mandy), Justin, Melissa, Kelly, James III, Amber (Dino), Brian, David, and Nathan; and several great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister Delores (Robert) Winston; brothers-in-law James (Joy) Mosley and Richard (Doris) Mosley; sisters-in-law,Joyce (Martin) Gould and Darlene (George) Barnes; brother-in-law Curtis Baker; and sisters-in-law Margaret Mosley and Paula Mosley. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will cherish his memory forever.
Jim's life was one filled with purpose, love and laughter. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
