James John Scherger

James "Jim" John Scherger, a cherished son, husband, father, and friend, passed away on January 28, 2025 at the age of 56 in Williamsburg, VA, following a brave battle with cancer. Born on June 10, 1968, in Lima, Ohio, Jim lived a life filled with passion, love, and compassion for others. Jim's humble nature mixed with a clever wit, made him a joy to be around. He cared deeply for those around him, always finding opportunities to help others in need. His love of perfecting his craft of restoring Early American furniture and antiques led him to creating a portfolio of exquisite and intricate pieces of art enjoyed by many. Jim was recognized by those in the field as a creative master of his craft, adhering to the best of values, leaving his work and talents unable to be duplicated.
After attending college in Ohio, his creativity brought him to the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he apprenticed under a master craftsman, allowing him to create relationships with antique collectors, dealers, and other master refinishers and restorers. He also worked as a caretaker on Stony Creek Estate, a private island, which allowed Jim to cherish time on the water, boating, storm watching, and appreciating waterside life. His attention to detail and precision led him to be known for his exceptional skills. The last stop on his career path, Colonial Williamsburg, where he was the Lead Millworker. His work was a testament to his love for preserving history and sharing it with others.
Beyond his professional life, Jim was a man of many interests. Jim felt strongly about helping others and paying his good fortunes forward. He enjoyed creating a beautiful oasis around his home, hand in hand with the love of his life, Joni, who he affectionately called "my angel". Together they'd venture out to find the perfect mid century modern items to make their house a home. Jim also loved music of many varieties and found favorite tunes best enjoyed at full volume. Jim enjoyed the simple pleasures of creating a blazing fire in their backyard after roaring up the chainsaw and clearing the woods, tending to the yard and making it "clean", pleasant evenings reminiscing in their backyard, and listening to the sounds and sights of nature and wildlife together. He cherished special times hunting for hidden treasures on the beach or in the woods with his son, Charlie, who he proudly called, "His number 1." They'd search for dead trees in the woods, braving to push them down, and then admiring their success. Tender talks with his mom, Bobbi, who he'd say was his best friend, were unforgettable moments as well. Family get-togethers filled with laughter and love in Naples, Florida hold fond memories for the whole family.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Joni (step children Kaitlin (Nic) and Brock), his son Charlie (mom, Priscilla Smith); his loving parents, Richard (Dick) and Barbara (Bobbi) Scherger; Steve (Lori) Scherger and Jeanna (Scott) Stallkamp, and many nieces and nephews and their families, who will continue to carry on Jim's kindness and humor in the light of Jim.
Intimate celebrations of his life will be announced at a later date to honor his memory both in Ohio and Virginia.
