Richard "Dick" F. Scherger was born on March 24th, 1941, in Delphos, OH. He peacefully went to heaven on August 13th, 2025, in Lima, OH at the age of 84.
Dick married his high school sweetheart, Barbara "Bobbi" (Patthoff) on August 31st, 1963. They have been married for almost 62 years. The couple has three children: Steve, Jeanna (Stallkamp) and Jim, who joined the Lord in January. In addition, Dick and Bobbi have seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Getting a great education, reaching his potential, and using his talents to help others to reach their goals was important to him. Dick attended Delphos St. John's Elementary School and St. John's High School, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1959. He went on to attend Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio where he received his bachelor's degree in psychology and his master's degree in School and Clinical Psychology. After Xavier, Dick began his career as a school psychologist with the Lima City Schools (36 yrs.), he directed the Title One program for disadvantaged students and served all three Catholic Elementary schools in Lima and the public schools in Delphos and Wapakoneta.
Throughout Dick's life, he strived to help people in any way he could; from serving as an altar boy, to directing programs in Lima, that benefited the entire community. He was on the medical staff at St. Rita's Mercy Health for twenty-five years. He served as Chairman of the St. Rita's Development Council for ten years. In 2003, he received the St. Rita's Mercy Club Award for his Humanitarian services. In 2015, Dick was inducted into the Delphos St. John's Hall of Fame for Professional Achievement. He also served on the Board of Directors of UNOH for twenty years, the Northwest Community Mental Health Center Board, as well as numerous other boards to serve our Lima Community. Through judging the Laws of Life, he encouraged students to examine values of honesty, perseverance, and good will.
Dick would say, "People will not remember what you say to them, but they will remember how you made them feel." Dick always made people feel special and appreciated with his genuine compliments, tips, and advice. He never knew a stranger. He was selfless, caring and had a great sense of humor.
Dick was an outstanding athlete throughout his life. He excelled at basketball, football, baseball, golf and tennis. In wanting to spread the joy of sports with others, he directed the Lima City Men's Golf Championship for thirty years and was the President of Shawnee Country Club.
Dick was a spiritual man who strived to follow in the footsteps of Christ. No matter what life threw at him, his faith never wavered. He found joy in celebrating the sacraments and peace in praying the rosary. A private family service will be held per Dick's request at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. He will be laid to rest at St. John's Cemetery in Delphos, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, in Dick's honor, please extend kindness to others, whether it be a simple smile or offering a memorial contribution to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) or St. Charles Borromeo (https://www.osvhub.com/st-charles-lima/giving/funds).
