James Schmidt Obituary

James Charles Schmidt, a lifelong resident of North Attleboro, passed away peacefully at Madonna Manor in North Attleboro on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his treasured family. He was the devoted and beloved husband for 64 years to the late Jean Marie (Curtis) Schmidt prior to her passing on April 6, 2022.

Born on July 27, 1931, in New York, New York, he was the second of five sons born to the late George and Isabelle Schmidt. At the age of eight, Jim and his family moved to North Attleboro where he was educated in the town school system.

To expand his horizons, at the age of 18, Jim joined the Massachusetts Army National Guard where he served for three years. To continue serving his country, Jim enlisted in the United States Army becoming a member of the famed 82nd Airborne Division. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim returned home to North Attleboro where he married his wife, Jean, and they started their family.

While working as a draftsman, Jim found that he had a design talent and proceeded to enroll in the Rhode Island School of Design art program. After working a short time at the Balfour Company in Attleboro, Jim was hired to join the art department at Leavens Manufacturing Company, also located in Attleboro, where he excelled to the position of Art Director during his 30 plus year tenure.

Jim had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer and played in a league where he met many lifelong friends. He treasured his morning meetings with "the guys" for a round of golf at Locust Valley. Jim was passionately involved in North Attleboro youth sports, coaching his sons' Little League Baseball and Pop Warner football teams. He was later inducted into the North Attleboro Junior Football Hall of Fame. In his later years, he was a devoted fan of the St. Bonaventure University Men's Basketball team, where he showed his support in various locations around the country. Jim spent many summers with his family on Cape Cod, enjoying clamming and quohogging, miniature golf, walks along the canal and eating ice cream. Jim treasured time spent on family trips in his RV, where many fond memories were made. Above all, Jim relished the time spent and memories made with his treasured family, who were the true focal point of his life.

Jim is survived by his beloved children; Kevin Schmidt and his wife Tammi of North Attleboro, Debbie (Schmidt) O'Donnell and her husband Bobby of North Attleboro, Mark Schmidt and his wife Anita of Cuba, NY, and Neil Schmidt and his wife Marji of Palm Coast, FL; his grandchildren, Trevin Schmidt and his wife Danielle, Trenna (Schmidt) Roque and her husband Nick, Kiley O'Donnell, Jaden O'Donnell, Nicholas Schmidt, Derek Schmidt, Michael Schmidt, Brianna (Schmidt) Hardy, and Haylee Schmidt; his brother, Thomas Schmidt and his wife Ruth of Harwich and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his late wife, Jean, he is predeceased by his parents, George, and Isabelle Schmidt; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Carmel Curtis; brothers, George Schmidt and his wife Gilda, Charles Schmidt, and Edward Schmidt and his wife Joan.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Madonna Manor, especially everyone on the 3rd floor for their care, comfort, and compassion that was provided to Jim.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 8:30 - 10:30 am on December 15, 2025, at Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck Street, Attleboro followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, St. Mary's, 14 Park Street, North Attleboro. Burial with military honors will be held privately at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Kevin and Family,
I had your father as a Little League Baseball Coach for a couple of years. I appreciate all the time he put in with us. He was all about teaching us how to play the game while having fun at the same time. I am very sorry for your loss.
