James (Jim) Patrick Shertzer, 84, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at UMPC Western Maryland Hospital with his family at his side.
Born on May 26, 1940, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late William Jennings and Margaret (Byrnes) Shertzer.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Theresa Kallmyer; brothers, John Shertzer and Willam Shertzer; and nephew Gregory Kallmyer. Jim is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Jim was a faithful member of Divine Mercy Parish, St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He graduated, St. Michaels Elementary school in, 1954, then Lasalle High School in, 1958. He went on to Frostburg State and graduated in 1962, with a teaching degree. He received his master’s degree in English in 1968. Jim taught at Penn Avenue school for 3 years and at Washington Middle School for 31 years, teaching Seventh Grade English.
Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He belonged to the Piney Mt. Sportsman Club and the Knights of Columbus. He loved tying flies, enjoyed playing golf, and dearly loved his Thursday night poker games. He worked very hard at the K of C fish dinners and really enjoyed talking to the people who attended.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Judy Wellings Shertzer of 62 years. His children, Theresa Cunnigham her husband Pat, Julie Lloyd her husband Bob, Jim Shertzer his wife Daniell and Diane Shertzer. Grandchildren, Adam Lloyd (Brandi), Kelli Negley (Michael), Bryan Cunningham (Julie), Matthew Cunningham (Megan), Benjamin Shertzer (Amber) and William Shertzer. Great-grandchildren Nora, Jennings and Miles Lloyd, Carson and Cameron on Negley, Eloise and August Cunningham and Ezra Cunningham. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends and Family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave , Frostburg, MD, on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, from 4 to 8 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Michael's Catholic Church, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 11 am, with Father Scott Kady and Deacon Roch Kallmyer as celebrants.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Adam Lloyd, Bryan Cunningham, Matthew Cunningham, Benjamin Shertzer, William Shertzer and Michael Negley.
At Jim’s request his body will be cremated following the services.
