On February 25, 2025, James Alan Simpson passed away at home. Raised in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, Alan lived in the Odenton (MD) area since 1995. He attended the University of Kentucky where he earned a degree in Communications and his master's in Library Science. A "Big Blue" alum, he loved University of Kentucky sports, especially basketball and football.
Alan went on to work for the Howard County Public Library system from 1995 to 2020. He then enjoyed a new career as a substitute teacher for the Annapolis Area Christian School. Alan was a member of the Nichols Bethel Methodist Church in Odenton. He enjoyed early morning volunteering with goats and horses at Maryland Therapeutic Riding, where equine therapy is used to help people find wellness. A Ravens fan, he had season tickets that he enjoyed with his family and was able to be in attendance for the Raven's 2012 Super Bowl win in New Orleans. More recently, he was the reigning 'Fantasy Football Champion' amongst friends and family, one of his greatest accomplishments. Alan was great at trivia, enjoyed watching television shows like Survivor and once, while in Boston, visited the iconic "Cheers" bar. He was an avid reader, averaging about 100 books a year. His favorite author was Stephen King and "Swan Song" by Robert R. McCammon was one of his favorite novels. Alan also had a passion for writing and maintained his own daily blog posting. When he wasn't writing or reading, he loved going on long walks with his beloved pet companion, Lily, who recently passed away at the age of 15.
Beloved husband of 32 years to Dawn Bunch Simpson; devoted father of Bradley Simpson and Jessica Simpson; and loving brother of Sonja "Sissy" Davis (spouse James), Wayne Simpson (spouse Rebecca) and Kim Simpson. He is predeceased by his parents Oscar and Sarah Simpson. Alan is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
