James received his education in the Austin Independent School District. He attended the David Crockett High School.
James was preceded in death by : Freddie Johnson (father); Melva Jean Smith (mother); Janice Marie Smith (sister); and Donnie Smith Johnson (brother).
James leaves precious memories to: Sidney Webb (son); Allen Smith (brother); Freddie Leon Smith (brother). As well as aunts and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
