James Calvin Speer, age 86 of Americus, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2025 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.
He was born in Bronwood, GA to the late James Calvin Speer, Sr. and Clara Merle Mathews Speer Clark. He received his masters in education from The University of Georgia and retired from the electronics department at Columbus Technical School and South Georgia Technical College. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Americus.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Lilllian Hobbs Speer. His four daughters; Pamela Ann Speer Barfield (Larry) of Millwood, GA., Patricia Lynn Speer Given (Marty) of Fort Mill, SC., Barbara Gail Speer Thomas (Charlie) of Cottonwood, AL, Carrie L. Cooley of Lumpkin, GA , thirteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife; Patsy Kennedy Speer and his daughter; Sunday Cooley.
He enjoyed building models including ships, rockets, trains, and radio controlled air planes. He was also an avid ham radio operator and enjoyed talking to people all over the United States and many other countries. Jim’s favorite pastime was watching the Georgia Bulldogs with Sara Lillian, his wife of 55 years.
A graveside service was held on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at Oak Grove Cemetery. Rev. Mike Truit officiated the service.
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Phoebe Sumter Foundation.
