James Lynn "Jim" Starks

James "Jim" Lynn Starks, 79, of Marion, passed away on October 26, 2025, at Unity Point Health - St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. At his request, no formal funeral will be held, but a memorial gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday, November 2nd from 2-4 PM at Marion Christian Church, 1050 McGowan Blvd., Marion, IA.

Jim was born on May 22, 1946, in Des Moines, and placed for adoption. The first six months of his life he was cared for by students in the Child Development Department at Iowa State University in Ames. He was adopted by Freeman and Ruby (Willmott) Starks and was raised in Waubeek and Marion, Iowa.

He graduated from Marion High School in 1964, where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball, as well as vocal and instrumental music. He attended St. Olaf College and Central College, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in biology.

He married Marilyn Franklin (Rambo) in 1968, and four children were born to this union. They later divorced. He married Patricia Fisher and became stepfather to her three children.

Jim worked briefly as a medical technician at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He continued his career in management at corrugation manufacturing companies in several states. After retirement, he settled back in Marion, IA where his children reside.

He frequented Country Kitchen Café, where he enjoyed visiting with friends and staff. He also enjoyed gardening, coin collecting, antiquing, golfing, and following sports, particularly the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his children, Michelle Starks, Angela (Adam) Munier, and Michael (Tiffany) Starks; stepchildren Mark Fisher, Stacy (Aaron) Stierman, and Mindy Jacobs; many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Kimberly Anne, second wife Patricia, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Memorials may be directed to Unity Point Health – St. Luke's Hospital Hospice for their compassionate care.
