James "Jim" L. Steeples, 78, of Quincy, passed away Friday, June 27, 2025, at his home in Quincy, IL.
Born on May 29, 1947, in Keokuk, IA, Jim was the beloved son of Duane A. and Jeannine (Cullen) Steeples. His life was a testament to his strength, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his family and country.
Jim graduated from Keokuk High School and went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Navy from 1965-1975, including fighting in the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Jim embarked on a career as an over-the-road truck driver for Gully, a role he held for 12 years. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to own and operate his own truck for five years before retiring. Jim carried this same sense of duty and commitment into his work with the American Legion Post #37, where he served as an adjutant and historian. His involvement with the Army National Guard of IL further exemplified his unwavering commitment to his country.
On August 17, 1968, Jim married the love of his life, Patricia Louise Mahoney, in Lomita, California, and she survives him. Their union was blessed with two children, Jim (Tammy) of Quincy and Shawn (Michelle) of Plainville, IL. Jim's legacy continues through his eight grandchildren, Angela Smith (Eric Mating), Jennifer Stickler, Adam Wiechert, Jessey Beaston (Aaron), Jeff Steeples, Allie Jensen (Shawn), Terry Sheets Jr. (Taelor), and Jesse Sheets, as well as his eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his two brothers, Robert Steeples (Debbie) and Rick Steeples; one sister, Patty Jones (Rick); and two aunts, Deanna Iverson and Jayne Galle. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim was a man of many interests and talents. He was an enthusiastic member of the "Traveling Trompers," a friend group with whom he shared many camping adventures at Mark Twain Lake, Nauvoo State Park, and Riverview Park Valley. His passion for square dancing led him to join the Twain Twirlers. His creative spirit found expression in woodworking, crafting cherished Christmas decorations for his family. A man who enjoyed a good game, Jim was fond of gambling, playing slots at the casino, and scratch-offs. Card games like poker and pinochle were among his favorites, as was riding motorcycles, a passion that began in California and continued in Illinois.
Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. He took great joy in staying connected with his grandchildren online and cherished the family reunions. The quiet moments spent with his loved ones were the ones he treasured most. His presence was a comforting and constant source of love and support, and he will be deeply missed.
