James “Blake” Sutherland Jr., 75, of East New Market, passed away peacefully in his home on June 19, 2025. Born in Baltimore, Blake spent most of his life in Anne Arundel County before settling down on the Eastern Shore.

A self-made entrepreneur, Blake built a remarkable career in land development, construction and real estate investing. Over the years, he accumulated numerous rental properties, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and entrepreneurial spirit.

Blake took great pleasure in the company of family and friends, finding joy in the outdoors crabbing and fishing. He was especially passionate about celebrating holidays, with the 4th of July being his favorite, a time when he loved to host gatherings filled with laughter, fond memories, fireworks and cannon fire.

Blake is survived by his beloved wife, Val; loving children, Blakeney Sutherland and his wife, Natalie, and Amy Sutherland; cherished grandchildren, Andrea King and Wyatt James Sutherland; and his adored great-grandchildren, Eden, Claire and Noah. He will also be missed by his devoted parents, Peggy Sue and Dr. Michael Tenner; dear siblings, Stewart Sutherland, David Tenner, Sallye Tenner, Susan Tenner, William Sutherland, David Sutherland, Ralph Sutherland, India Sutherland and their families. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Douglas and Randolph Sutherland, and his father James Sutherland Sr.

Friends and family are invited to gather at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, Glen Burnie, on Friday, June 27th, from 4 - 7 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, 10 AM, in the funeral home chapel.
