James Sweeney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan Funeral Home - Hanover on Mar. 16, 2026.
James "Jay" L. Sweeney, of Dennisport, formerly of Hanson and North Quincy, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at the age of 78, with his daughter by his side.

Born and raised in North Quincy, Jay was a graduate of North Quincy High School. He worked as a bartender at the family-owned Sweeney's Sagamore Grille before settling into his career as an elevator technician. Jay retired in 1994.

Jay's greatest passion was cars. He served as president of the Cape Cod Corvette Club for many years and loved nothing more than getting behind the wheel with no real destination, loud rock music playing. He also enjoyed golfing, gardening, and the occasional fireworks display.

Jay was the beloved father of Briana (Sweeney) Lucas and her husband, Dave Lucas, of Hanson, and a devoted Poppi to his grandchildren, Emerson, Natalie, and Joey. He was the brother of the late Carol Higgins and her husband Jim of Hanover, Russ Sweeney and his wife Jean of Weymouth, and Joan Myatt and her husband Jack of Hingham. He is also survived by his longtime girlfriend, Janet DePesa of Dennisport, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, March 22, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Route 53, Hanover. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels (St. Mary's Church), 392 Hanover Street, Route 139, Hanover.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
