James Elvin Swenson

James (Jim) Elvin Swenson, affectionately known as Uncle Elvin to his many nieces and nephews, was a loving father, devoted grandfather, and cherished friend. He passed away on May 22, 2025, at Olathe Hospice House, leaving behind a legacy characterized by kindness, laughter, and strong familial bonds. Jim was born on July 27, 1939, in Waverly, Kansas, to Walter and Ruth (Richardson) Swenson, and spent his early years on the family farm.

In 1960 Jim met the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Griffin. They were united in marriage on March 11, 1961, at the Machiasport Congregational Church. Jim and Pat created lasting memories through travel and exploration, cherishing moments that would fill a lifetime. They were married for 61 years until Pat’s passing in 2022.

Jim was always busy, with his hands never still and his mind brimming with ideas and creative pursuits. He could often be found in his barn tinkering on various projects or seeking quiet reprieve from the list of tasks that Pat had for him.

Jim had a long and fulfilling career as an electronics technician with Honeywell, where he applied his skills and expertise for many years before a well-deserved retirement. His technical savvy was matched only by his vibrant sense of humor; he was known as a practical joker, always seeking to bring smiles and laughter to those around him.

As an Air Force veteran, Jim proudly served his country from 1963 to 1967, earning an honorable discharge that he wore with pride. After his military service, he remained committed to his community as a member of the American Legion Post 250 in Louisburg, Kansas.

Jim and Pat found camaraderie and friendship as a member of the Show Me RV Camping Group, where he took on the role of wagon master, leading others on trips to various destinations across the Midwest. They enjoyed spending summers in their home in Maine and winters in their RV in Arizona and Texas, often inviting their children and grandchildren to join them on these adventures, creating many cherished memories.

In recent year, Jim enjoyed attending the local senior center, where he could socialize and connect with friends.

He is survived by his son, Michael (Tammy) Swenson; daughter, Cheryl (Mike) Fennesy; three grandchildren: Ashley (Matt) Lemke, Bradley (Katie) Swenson, and Griffin Fennesy; five great-grandchildren: Amelia, Grant, Eleanor, Wyatt, and McKenna. He is also survived by his brother, George Swenson; sister, Virginia (Bill) Robinett; and many nieces, nephews and friends whose lives he touched with his warmth and humor. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat Swenson, and his parents, Walter and Ruth Swenson. He is also reunited in spirit with his sisters, Alice (Tom) Jones, Gladys (Bill) Brashear, and Mary (J.O.) Burks.

Remembered for his unwavering spirit and gentle heart, Jim leaves behind a family and community that will carry forward his legacy of love and laughter for generations to come.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Friday, May 30, 2025, at Dengel & Son Mortuary - Louisburg Chapel, 1 Aquatic Drive, Louisburg, KS 66053. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Louisburg United Methodist Church, 249 N Metcalf Rd, Louisburg, KS 66053. Inurnment will take place following the service at Freeman Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Louisburg VFW Post 7348 and American Legion Post 250.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made payable to the Olathe Hospice House located at 15310 S Marion St, Olathe, KS 66061.
