James H. Ten Eyck, 83, a Hyde Park resident for almost 40 years, died on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Mid Hudson Regional Hospital, following a short illness.
Born on June 24, 1941, in Somerville, NJ, he was the son of James Harold Ten Eyck and Viola Julia Bohn. He attended Somerville High School, then went on to earn a BS in Mathematics from Lafayette College in 1963. Following graduation, he worked in several capacities at IBM in Endicott for five years before enrolling in the graduate program at Syracuse University, where he received a Ph.D. in Physics in 1973.
It was also in Syracuse, NY that he met Veronica O'Neill, who he married on June 24, 1973, and who was his wife for 48 years, until her death in 2021. His only child, David Ten Eyck, was born in Syracuse in 1974.
After leaving Syracuse, Jim began an academic career that took him to several cities, including Worcester, MA, where he earned an MS in Computer Science from WPI. Between 1983 and his retirement in 2009, he was a professor of Computer Science at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. In the early years of his retirement he also worked as an adjunct professor at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.
Following his retirement, James Ten Eyck devoted much of his time to writing. He authored two books: a reflection on twentieth century American history entitled The Life and Times of Walter Reuther: An Unfinished Liberal Legacy (2016) and a book of poetry entitled Footprints (2022).
He enjoyed travelling and made regular trips to Europe, in particular to his wife's home country of Ireland and to his son's adopted country of France.
He is survived by his son, David, his daughter-in-law, Stéphanie, and his three beloved grandchildren, Marie, Elliot, and Arthur.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday March 6, between 4pm and 7pm at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, in Hyde Park, NY. A memorial ceremony will be held on Friday March 7 at 10am at the funeral home. Burial will take place at the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in Bedminster, NJ, at 1pm on Friday March 7.
In lieu of flowers, Jim's family respectfully requests memorial donations to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (https://www.macular.org/).
